Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Our firm helps organizations, municipalities, states, private-sector, and public policy leaders, develop artificial intelligence policies that address how automated systems affect people, public services and government decisions.

Legal policy for automated decisions

An AI policy needs to identify who makes a decision, what information the system uses, and how a person can question an outcome. We work with nonprofits, public-interest organizations, technology providers and coalitions to translate those questions into legislation, procurement terms and rules for implementation.

Our policy work can address algorithmic accountability, discrimination risks, transparency, human review, data sharing and safeguards for public-sector AI. We also help organizations distinguish requirements already in force from proposed legislation and voluntary governance practices.

A record in algorithmic accountability

As a New York City Council Member, Ben Kallos co-sponsored oversight of automated decision-making in city agencies. In 2023, the Council’s Technology Committee chair identified her updated algorithmic-accountability bill as a reintroduction of this proposal. That history supports a practical focus on how government uses technology to allocate services and make consequential decisions.

Ben also has a background in software development and technology procurement policy. Our firm brings that experience to discussions about the legal authority, public accountability and operational design of AI systems.

How we can help

Engagements can include legal and policy research, legislative drafting, regulatory comments, testimony, and review of proposed AI procurement safeguards. We can help define documentation, oversight and complaint processes and coordinate with technical specialists when evaluation requires engineering or statistical expertise.

The starting point is the particular use case: who will be affected, which institution will deploy the system, and what decision or process the client wants to change.
